Second Grade Math Curriculum
I understand firsthand the excitement and challenges of teaching young learners. Math is one of the most important subjects we introduce at the primary level. Watching second graders develop their foundational math skills is incredibly rewarding, but finding the right resources to keep them engaged and on track can be quite challenging.
That’s why when I created a comprehensive and engaging math program specifically designed for second-grade teachers, I jumped for it and created Mindful Math. This second grade math program has transformed classroom math lessons, making math an exciting and enjoyable adventure for students.Â

It encourages students to solve problems, think critically, and work with their peers in whole- and small-group settings.
In fact, this program is aligned with educational standards like the U.S. Common Core and the math curriculums of British Columbia and Ontario in Canada. In other words, Mindful Math is a tool that easily adapts to various curriculums, providing an excellent resource for teachers everywhere.
The 10 math units cover all topics taught in 2nd grade math, including:

Second Grade Mindful Math Curriculum Overview
The second grade mindful math curriculum goes way beyond simple worksheets and posters. Unlike other options, it’s a complete program designed to support your teaching and your students’ success!
Second Grade Math Lesson Plans
Each unit includes detailed 2nd grade math lesson plans. These plans cover all the standards, engaging activities, group discussions, and more.
Lesson Materials and Visual Aids
The 2nd grade Mindful Math curriculum provides the materials you need for effective teaching and student learning. Various math tools, such as manipulatives, charts, number lines, and more, are all included. When students get their hands on these tools, they are more actively engaged, leading to a deeper understanding of the math concepts.Â
Also included are ‘I Can’ posters to encourage a growth mindset and can help clarify learning goals. These posters are designed with second graders in mind, using language that’s easy for young students to understand and apply.
Math Task Cards
Mindful Math task cards are perfect for quick math warm-up activities or as independent exit tickets. A range of tasks reinforce skills taught in previous lessons, helping to build fluency. They also encourage second graders to practice mindful mathematical thinking, which can help them as math becomes harder in future grades.
Math Vocabulary Cards
Second grade math vocabulary cards are helpful tools for teaching key math terms. Each card features a math word and a simple sentence to explain its meaning, making it easier for students to understand and remember new concepts. By regularly using these cards, students can build a strong math vocabulary, which helps them better understand lessons and communicate their ideas. These cards make learning math words fun and interactive, supporting students as they grow in their math skills.
Mental Math Flashcards
Flashcards are wonderful for developing 2nd grade students’ mental math abilities and quick recall. They can be used in small groups, during whole-group activities, with partners, or at math centers. Each lesson plan provides instructions on how to use and effectively introduce them to students.
Math Worksheets
In Second Grade Mindful Math, each lesson includes independent math practice pages for students to complete independently. These second grade math worksheets reinforce learning and help students retain key concepts. Also, these worksheets are designed with varying difficulty levels to suit every student’s needs and abilities.
Math Journal Prompts
Math journal prompts offer versatile options for your classroom. In addition to being used as warm-up activities, they can also be used as extra practice or homework. Basically, each prompt reviews the skills and concepts taught in the previous lesson, making them an excellent tool for reinforcing learning and providing a valuable review activity.
Math Talks
Second grade math talks are short, interactive chats where students discuss math problems and share different ways to solve them. These talks help students develop strong mental math skills and a deeper understanding of math concepts. By explaining their thinking and listening to others, students learn that there are multiple ways to approach a problem. Math talks also build confidence and improve communication skills, making math more engaging and accessible for second graders.
Hands-On Activities, Games, and Centers
The 2nd grade math curriculum includes several hands-on activities. For example, these activities can easily be done independently, in small groups, or with partners. Students can enjoy fun math games, interactive math centers, and engaging worksheets that help them learn regardless of their learning style.
These 2nd grade math activities often end up being the students’ favorites. Can you blame them? In fact, each lesson offers different games and centers, ensuring every student is able to participate, feel confident, and be successful.Â
Second Grade Pre, Post, and Quick Math Assessments and Unit Tests
Before each lesson, you have the option to give students a pre-test. This is a great option if you are looking to collect data on what students already know. Afterward, there is an option for a post-test, a quick check math task, or a unit test.
Students can complete this activity independently or in small groups. These assessments allow students to demonstrate their understanding and teachers are able to see areas where specific students may need further support.
Planning the Second Grade Mindful Math Curriculum
I suggest dedicating a month to teaching each 2nd grade math unit of Mindful Math, providing a unique focus for every month of the school year.
Introduce a new lesson every other day to allow ample time to explore content, engage in activities, and practice skills. This pacing turns each lesson into a two-day experience, giving repeated practice and enhancing fluency in mathematical concepts.
Breaking Down a Lesson
Day 1 (45-60 minutes): Start the lesson with warm-up activities involving task cards and math journal exercises to get students thinking and ready to learn. Afterward, follow this with some quick mental math activities to engage their minds. Then, move into a whole group lesson where you introduce the main concept of the day to the entire class, ensuring that everyone clearly understands what they will be learning.
Day 2 (45-60 minutes): Begin the day with mental math to review and reinforce what was learned previously. Then, have students work on independent practice problems to build their skills and confidence. After that, incorporate hands-on activities like centers and games to make learning fun and interactive, helping students apply what they’ve learned in a practical way. Finally, wrap up the lesson with quick checks to assess how well students understand the concept and identify any areas needing further review.
Remember, you don’t need to cover every part of each lesson. Instead, use the materials to meet your students’ needs and adjust your teaching to fit different learners.
Getting Organized for Second Grade Mindful Math
Let’s get everything in order for your Mindful Math block. Each unit has clear instructions on how to use and prepare each part of the program.
Easy Printing
Before you start, ensure all the 2nd grade math materials are printed and ready. Print out activities, posters, task cards, and quick checks beforehand. For durability, print on white or colored cardstock, then laminate and cut them. This way, your materials will last all year.
Organizing with Binders
Keep everything organized with binders. To start, create a binder for each unit of Mindful Math using the provided covers and spines for a neat, uniform look. Then, find the perfect shelf or bin to store these binders with other needed materials.
There are plenty of resources you can place inside each binder. For example, place the lesson plans, blackline masters of practice printables, and journal prompts. Meanwhile, you can add lesson materials to zipper pouches or plastic holders. Choose what works best for you to keep everything easily accessible and organized.
Student Setup
Print and Include all the 2nd grade math practice printables your students will need in their workbooks for each unit. After that, if you choose, give the student workbook a cover to give them a polished look. Finally, use math journals or notebooks to adjust the print size as needed for journal prompts and practice printables.
Manipulatives
Math manipulatives are essential for making learning concrete and engaging. If you already have them, perfect! If you don’t, you can print and use the provided lesson materials. This hands-on approach makes learning fun and effective.
Storage Bins
Bins or tubs are incredibly useful. Use them to keep everything organized in one place. Prepare each bin to hold math manipulatives, binders, student workbooks, and math picture books. This way, all the essentials for each unit are neatly contained and easy to access.
