“In the Snow” Winter Writing Activity
Today, I am sharing a fun winter snow poetry writing activity for primary. I love this writing activity for any season. I love that children can show their sense of humor and be creative at the same time. This snow poetry writing activity is called “In the Snow…”
We start our snow poetry writing activity by discussing what we can and cannot do in the winter and the snow. I encourage my students to think about how the seasons of winter and summer compare. We make a chart together to record our ideas.
I give them one of my examples so they understand the pattern and how to develop opposite ideas. For example, you can build a snowman (winter), but you can’t build a sandcastle (summer). They came up with many examples of things we can and cannot do in the snow. A lot of laughter erupts as we come up with these ideas.
We review how to print neatly and complete the sentences on the template. Students come up with four sentence frames to write on their paper.
I always allow my students to use the ideas that we have generated as a class. I do not, however, let them copy the spelling word for word. I’d prefer they sound out, use invented spellings, and try their best. I say, “You can use your ideas as well!” to encourage my students. This challenges those students who have different ideas to share them.
Creating a Winter Writing Bulletin Board Display
After they have four ideas written down, they draw a picture to match their writing. They can trace their writing with skinny markers to make their writing “pop” from the page. We like to use these markers by Crayola.
You can use the same writing activity a few times yearly to compare different seasons and celebrations. Students will feel successful because they have a pattern and template to follow.
My students color and decorate their snow poetry writing. We hang them on our “Wow Work” bulletin board for everyone to see.
