Looking for a writing activity that will inspire even your most hesitant writers this winter? Look no further—Snow Poetry is just what you need to get your students excited about putting pen to paper!

Creating a Snow Poem
Picture this: It’s a cold winter morning, and your classroom is buzzing with excitement. Outside, the playground is covered in snow, and inside, the kids are full of energy, swapping stories about snowball fights and snow angels. It’s the perfect moment to capture and turn that winter magic into something creative. That’s where Snow Poetry comes in—a fun, simple way to get your students excited about writing while embracing all the cozy vibes of the season.
What is Snow Poetry All About?
Snow Poetry is one of those activities that gets kids laughing, thinking, and letting their imaginations run wild. They’ll write poems about the magic of snow—anything from silly snowman adventures to quiet moments watching snowflakes fall. It’s all about letting them show off their personalities while sneaking in a little learning (shh, they don’t need to know that part!).

Why Teachers Love It
This activity is super easy to pull together and works for any age group. Plus, it’s the perfect way to bring some winter magic into your classroom without needing glitter or glue (win!). Kids get to practice poem writing skills, play with descriptive language, and have a blast being creative.
Try “In the Snow” Snow Poetry, and watch your classroom turn into a winter wonderland of creativity and giggles!
Snow Poetry Breakdown
Kick off the snow poetry activity by discussing all the things we can and can’t do in the winter. Get the students thinking about how winter compares to summer—what’s different, what’s similar, and what makes each one special. Create a simple chart to jot down everyone’s ideas, sparking creativity and setting the stage for their poems!
Share a snow poetry example to help students catch on to the pattern and how to come up with opposite ideas. You might say, “You can build a snowman in the winter, but you can’t build a sandcastle!” From there, the students will start brainstorming their own ideas—what they can and can’t do in the snow—and the room quickly fills with laughter as the suggestions get more creative (and sometimes downright silly!).
Go over the importance of neat printing and how to complete the sentences on the template. Then, students work together to come up with four sentence frames to use for their writing.
Students can use the snow poetry ideas we’ve brainstormed as a class, but they should be encouraged to sound out words, use inventive spelling, and give it their best shot instead of copying everything word for word. A little reminder like, “You can add your own ideas too!” helps motivate them to think independently and share unique thoughts, challenging those with different perspectives to let their creativity shine.
Creating a Winter Writing Bulletin Board Display
After students have four ideas on their paper, they draw a picture to match their writing. They can trace their writing with skinny markers to make their writing “pop” from the page.
This activity doesn’t have to just stop at snow poetry. You can use it a few times yearly to compare different seasons and celebrations. Students will feel successful because they have a pattern and template to follow.
Students color and decorate their snow poetry writing. Then, create a snowy wonderland of poems on a wow board or create a wintertime bulletin board for everyone to see.
