Complete this Frankenstein drawing lesson with your class at school and create the perfect bulletin board “Franken-buddies” display for Halloween.
A Frankenstein Directed Drawing Any Child Can Create
Today, I’m bringing you one of my favorite Halloween art activities: The Frankenstein Franken-Buddies directed drawing!
Frankenstein Drawing Steps
Below are my step-by-step instructions to create these cuties in your room.
I give each child a large white piece of quality art paper. Turn it long side up and down, and get a sharp pencil and eraser ready. I dislike erasing too much and encourage the kiddos to not expect or try for perfection!
I have my students complete the drawing with a pencil, and once they are happy with it, they can trace it with a Sharpie marker and erase the pencil lines. Then, they are ready to use their watercolor paints to paint their Franken-buddies.
I request that they use green for the face and black for the hair, but the rest is up to their creativity.
Don’t you just love how great these Franken-buddies turned out? I especially love how excited and artistic my students feel after completing this directed drawing (or any, for that matter). Teaching kids to draw step by step is a powerful and effective tool!
Here are the 1st, 3rd, and 4th graders Franken-buddies displayed in our school hallway. I love how they look cut up and glued onto purple and black construction paper.
Each one is so interesting and unique in its own way! A cute bulletin board display with these will brighten the kids’ spirits and provide an educational opportunity just in time for Halloween.
I hope you love one of my fall favorites for art and take the dive into directed drawing in your classroom.

These are really great Elyse! I love directed drawing activities and I'm pretty sure my ones could handle this.
Hi! Loved these and added a bit of writing to it! I read Do not build a Frankenstein by Neil Numberman. We did an opinion piece about whether or not Frankenstein would make a good friend. He would because he could carry you on his shoulder, carry heavy bags etc. He wouldn’t because he might trample mom’s garden etc. It was a fun addition to your directed drawing!
Hi! That sounds wonderful! I will have to check that book out. What a great writing activity for kids.
Cheers!
Elyse 🙂
I love this, found it on Pinterest! My kids had a blast today, I teach 2nd so I add writing with it 🙂 .I just posted a little Facebook post about it!

How do you make the students draw big faces? I tried this on construction paper and they did tiny rectangles. I modeled it and they all look like mine. Suggestions?
Hi Leyla! I think you are doing the right thing by modeling. I wouldn’t expect them to get it right right away, but with more and more practice with directed drawing, they will improve. Talk about spacing and sizing when you model. It will come!
I have tried to download your free directions to no avail.
