Fun Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in March
Leprechaun Hunt
Younger kids are always up for a challenge, especially those that involve hunting for mythical creatures. Encourage students to think about where leprechauns may be hiding and search for them around the room. You can tie in a word search or read around the room to look for those silly green tricksters.
Classroom Chaos
Before students enter the room, mess up your classroom. I know it doesn’t sound enjoyable, but kids remember these types of things, which are only temporary. Use washable paint to leave little green footprints on table tops and tile floors. Knock over a few things and blame it on the leprechauns.
Ireland & Traditions
Broaden student’s horizons by teaching them about Ireland and the traditions they hold dear. Discuss the shamrock symbol and how the myths of leprechauns came to be. They’ll learn much about green and gold colors, corned beef, and other classic favorites.
Dancing Jig
Celebrate this March holiday by playing Irish music and dancing a jig. Let kids move their bodies however they wish, or invite them to watch this video to learn a proper Irish jig! They will enjoy learning something new and moving around the room.
Green Day
Pick a day of the week to ask students to wear green! They might come in wearing one article of green clothing or deck themselves in green attire and accessories! It’s always fun to see what they come up with.
You can also incorporate green food by providing pre-packaged green snacks or inviting them to bring green snacks to eat together during a specific time.
St. Patrick’s Day Books
Reading stories is always a great idea during any holiday. Add these titles to your lesson plans in March to inspire and enchant students as you complete St. Patrick’s Day activities.

- The Berenstain Bears’ St. Patrick’s Day by Mike Berenstain
- The Night Before St. Patrick’s Day by Natasha Wing

Students enjoy writing activities that allow them to be clever. Give them this fun prompt and encourage their imagination. First, model your ideas for them and brainstorm ideas to get their creative juices flowing. After, let them share their stories when everyone is finished.
“On Top of the Rainbow” STEAM
Encourage kids to work together to create a rainbow bridge strong enough to hold a cup full of coins. They will be given pipe cleaners, playdough, and a cup! Then, give them a time limit and see what they come up with.
“Walking Water” Science Experiment
You can demonstrate how water spreads through paper towels using plastic cups, water, and food coloring. Kids will be amazed at how the pretty colors travel, creating a rainbow in this fun science experiment!
“How to Catch a Leprechaun” Book Activity
Once you read How to Catch a Leprechaun by Adam Wallace, have kids brainstorm how they might be able to trap a leprechaun. Ask them to bring pre-made traps or materials to build one in class. They can work in teams or pairs or build traps independently. It’s always fun to let them showcase and test their creations.
“Lucky, Little Leprechaun” Poem & Activities
Use this cute March poem to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! Read it daily to build reading skills and find fun vocabulary words, sight words, and CVC words. Then, have kids rewrite the poem independently so they begin to recognize patterns in sentences and rhyming.
Leprechaun Directed Drawing
Have kids follow these simple steps to draw a mischievous little leprechaun. Give them each a large sheet of paper and watercolors to create fantastic artwork for the room. We usually draw the picture one day and color it the next!
“On St. Patrick’s Day, I Like To” Hat Craftivity
Let kids share what they like to do each March 17th! They can choose from numerous fun options to add to their hat. They will use scissors and glue to attach the activities they like to complete and then parade them around the school for all to see.
Dancing Leprechaun Craft
A holiday isn’t complete without an adorable craft to put up on the walls! Use this leprechaun template to create silly little leprechauns with your students. The arms are made from folded paper strips, making them look extra wiggly. It’s an excellent activity for those fine motor skills.
Classroom Games
St. Patrick’s Day Charades: Use this classic game for classroom community-building! Have kids take turns acting out the situations on the cards. It’s excellent as a whole group game between lessons and is bound to bring laughter.
Board Game: This simple board game gets kids thinking! They will take turns spinning the provided spinner to reach the end. As they go, they must answer St. Patrick’s themed questions to get to know one another.
Action Clover Card Game: Keep this activity in your back pocket for daily transitions. It’s also great to use as a simple brain break if kids need to shake out their wiggles or take their minds off of their lessons.
